Taking the time to visit New Zealand’s glaciers is a vital inclusion for any South Island holiday - after all, these ancient wonders may not be around forever. From the alpine heights of Aoraki/Mt Cook to the rainforest-fringed West Coast, here is how to witness these frozen icons on your next Road Trip adventure.

1. The Titan: Tasman Glacier (Mt Cook National Park)

The Tasman Glacier is a true behemoth. Stretching 27km in length and plunging 600m deep, it is a remnant of the Pleistocene ice age that carved out the very basin of Lake Pukaki.

  • The Classic Trek: Follow the Hooker Valley Track. This 10km (3-hour return) journey is a local favourite, crossing three swing bridges with breathtaking views of Aoraki/Mt Cook. It terminates at the glacier lake where, on a clear day, you’ll see brilliant blue icebergs bobbing in the water.

  • The Glacier Explorers Boat Tour: This is one of only three experiences of its kind in the world. Operating from September to May, you’ll navigate the terminal lake to get up close to icebergs that are over 500 years old.

  • Keen for more? Our Southern Adventure 10 Day Tour is designed to showcase the best of this rugged region.

2. The Hidden Gem: Rob Roy Glacier (Wanaka)

While many visitors to Wanaka flock to Roy’s Peak for the "Instagram shot," savvy trampers head into Mount Aspiring National Park. The Rob Roy Glacier track is like stepping into a prehistoric world.

  • The Tramp: Wind through lush native beech forest before emerging into a massive alpine valley flanked by sheer cliffs and cascading waterfalls.

  • The "Jurassic" Vibe: With the "hanging" glacier suspended high above the valley floor, it looks like a scene out of Jurassic Park - if the dinosaurs lived amongst the snow and ice!

  • Go Guided: For a deeper look, Eco Wanaka offers a fantastic guided day tour through the Matukituki Valley, including a well-earned picnic lunch at one of the most scenic spots in the country.

3. The Rainforest Giants: Fox & Franz Josef

The West Coast glaciers are world-famous because they are amongst the only glaciers on Earth to share a valley floor with a temperate rainforest.

  • Franz Josef: A dramatic descent, dropping from 2,500m above sea level to just 300m in a mere 11km.

  • Fox Glacier: The West Coast’s longest glacier, offering a more gradual, majestic incline.

  • The Blue Ice Heli-Hike: Because the glaciers move so rapidly, walking onto the ice from the valley floor is no longer safe. Today, the Heli-Hike is the gold standard. You’ll take a scenic flight over the crevasses before being dropped off with crampons to explore ice caves and frozen tunnels with a professional mountain guide.

Choose Your Perspective: How do you want to see the ice?

Experience Best For... What to Expect
Heli-Hike Adventure & Intimacy A scenic flight plus 2 hours of tramping on the actual ice.
Fixed-Wing Flight Scale & Grandeur A bird’s-eye view of the entire Southern Alps mountain range.
Glacier Boating Families & Geology Touching 500-year-old icebergs from a specialised boat.
Valley Walking Budget & Flexibility Stunning views of the glacier face from well-maintained tracks.

Expert Planning Tip: The "Snow Landing"

If a long tramp isn't your cup of tea but you still want to feel the crunch of glacier snow under your boots, ask us about a Scenic Helicopter Flight with a Snow Landing. It is the most spectacular way to grasp the sheer enormity of the Southern Alps.
