Whangarei

Whangārei, Northland's largest city with a population of around 50,000, is a bustling hub where urban amenity meets natural beauty. Situated on a picturesque harbour, the city thrives on its busy port, oil refining, and a strong agricultural backbone.
The city boasts numerous attractive parks and gardens, including the serene Cafler Park, perfect for a leisurely stroll. The vibrant Town Basin, located right on the quayside in the city centre, is a popular precinct brimming with an array of shops, cafes, and restaurants, offering a lively atmosphere day and night. Just a short 5-kilometre drive from the city, the impressive Whangārei Falls cascade beautifully, providing a stunning natural spectacle well worth a visit. For adventurers and nature enthusiasts, Whangārei is also the gateway to an underwater paradise. To the east lie the world-renowned Poor Knights Islands, a fully protected Marine Reserve accessible primarily by dive trips departing from nearby Tutukākā Harbour.

Whangarei Quarry Gardens is a garden project created by community volunteers in the forested western hills of Whangarei City. What was once a dilapidated quarry site has now become a subtropical oasis for all to enjoy. Often referred to as the Winterless North, With an annual rainfall of 1500-2000mm per year and New Zealand's highest average temperatures Northland has a truly subtropical climate. These climatic conditions, coupled with the sheltered and heat-radiating properties of a stone quarry, create an ideal microclimate for growing a plethora of native and exotic subtropical plants. Whangarei Quarry Gardens is a wonderful work in progress - historically fascinating, botanically captivating, and a beautiful reflection of the power of community.
