Grab a rare opportunity to explore a glacier up-close. You’ll see all three Franz Josef Glacier ice-falls on this heli-hike.
The experience starts with an aerial viewing of the ancient frozen river. It's a magical experience, not to mention the panoramic views of the Southern Alps and surrounding rain forest.
Once you land on the glacier itself, you’ll be guided on a two-hour expedition through a wonderland of ice tunnels and towering pinnacles. You’ll also learn about the history of the area and why the ice has a mysterious blue hue, before hopping aboard the helicopter for another memorable flight home.
Helicopter Line is located on the Main Road – State Highway 6 -- just north of Franz Josef township. The flight will depart from their offices. (Note: State Highway 6 is the main highway to Franz Josef from either Wanaka or Greymouth.)
Couples, groups or families who want to have a unique experience over a natural wonder of New Zealand. Enjoy listening to history from the pilots as well as sharing and creating memories of a special adventure with this Franz Josef Glacier Heli Hike.
Franz Josef Glacier was first explored in 1865 by geologist Julius von Haast who named the 12km glacier after the emperor Franz Joseph 1 of Austria.
